Britney Spears fails to surprise (+pics)

A year after her disastrous performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, Britney Spears opened the event's 25th annual installment in anticlimactic fashion, going away the vocalizing to others.

After weeks of hype, the pop vocalizer took the stage just to deliver four sentences, shielding her lower face with her microphone.

"Thank you so much. Thank you for all the love. I'm here tonight to celebrate a very important birthday, the 25th day of remembrance of the VMAs. This is the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards and it starts right now."

And that was it. While MTV had said Spears would not be telling, it had promised a fun surprise.

The audience barely had time to digest her pro forma delivery earlier R&B singer Rihanna belted out the show's offset musical performance.

Spears did return to the stage a few minutes later to accept the first prize of the night, best female picture for her tune Piece Of Me.

It also delineate the outset MTV "Moonman" statuette of her career.

She thanked God, her home and dedicated the award to her fans. Spears is too in contention for video recording of the year and best pop video, both also for Piece of Me, which stalled at No. 18 on Billboard's Hot one C singles chart earlier this year.

Spears inadvertently stole the show last year. Clearly unsteady and out-of-shape, she badly lip-synched to a song, drawing bewildered stares from the high-wattage consultation and universal derision in the mussy aftermath.

But the tabloid target area seems to have avoided any calamities in late months. While she puts her life back together, her ex has total custody of their two sons, and her father and a lawyer suffer taken control of her business affairs.

The show was hosted by British comedian Russell Brand, who implored Americans to elect Democratic presidential campaigner Barack Obama.

Brand described US President George W Bush as a "retarded res publica fella ... In England, George Bush wouldn't be trusted with a pair of scissors".

Perhaps best known to mainstream audiences for his scene-stealing turn as a lovably sleazy rock headliner in the romantic comedy feature "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," Brand also ripped Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, and described the British royal family as "inbred nitwits".

The awards ar being held in Los Angeles for the first time in a tenner, on the historic studio apartment lot of MTV's corporate sibling, Paramount Pictures.

The lifestyle cable electronic network is exploitation the fake city streets, rooftops, and sound stages all over the Paramount lot to show diverse performances.

Besides Spears, other video of the year nominees are: R&B singer Chris Brown's Forever, teen idols the Jonas Brothers' Burnin' Up, girl group the Pussycat Dolls' When I Grow Up and English pop duette the Ting Tings' Shut Up and Let Me Go.

Last year, 7.1 million MTV viewers watched the festivities, according to Nielsen Media Research.

While viewership was up from 5.8 million the year before, the numbers were a far cry from the record 12 jillion viewers for the 1999 version.

The Dixie Chicks rose from relative reconditeness in 1998 to suit one of the about democratic acts of the Apostles in modern-day state music. Their origins appointment game closely a tenner earlier, to 1989, when tinkerer Martie Seidel and her banjo-playing sister Emily Erwin formed the group in Dallas with bassist Laura Lynch and guitar player Robin Lynn Macy; after acquiring their start on local street corners, the quartette presently gradatory to clubs, receiving an enormous boost when Seidel earned one-third place honors at the National Fiddle Championships. Originally, the Dixie Chicks (their name divine by the Little Feat song "Confederacy Chickens") promoted a classic cowgirl mental image, fill in with a good elysian by traditional land, kinsfolk, and blue grass; they regular highborn their 1990 indie-label debut Give thanks Heavens for Dale Evans.

With 1992's Slight Ol' Cowgirl, the Chicks began slowly moving toward a more than contemporaneous good, a transformation that in part resulted in the exit of Macy; with Lynch presumptuous lead vocal duties, the remaining trinity resurfaced in 1993 with Shouldn't a Told You That. Shortly after the Chicks sign-language with Sony's new revived Monument imprint in 1995, Lynch left the group as easily -- according to a December 10, 1998, lineament in the Dallas Observer, both she and Macy were likely victims of Seidel and Erwin's desire to foster a more than vernal epitome; the powder store goes on to call the group "the country version of Menudo, hiring and firing off based on age." Soon named as Lynch's replacement was and so 21-year-old booster cable vocalizer Natalie Maines, the girl of steel guitar caption Lloyd Maines.

The lineup switch brought with it a young contemporaneous closet and an as modernized land good; still, few predicted the enormous succeeder of the Dixie Chicks' 1998 major-label debut, Wide-eyed Open Spaces. After the album's throw out first exclusive, "I Can Love You Better," became the group's number 1 Top Ten hit, both "There's Your Trouble" and the form of address track went on to top the area charts. Within a year of Wide-eyed Open Spaces' freeing, the record had bypast quadruple pt, and the Dixie Chicks had turn superstars -- not only did they have home Best Vocal Group honors and the Horizon Award from the Country Music Association, but they were besides named Favorite New Country Artist at the American Music Awards. Wide Open Spaces to boot earned a Grammy for Best Country Album on its way to becoming the best-selling duette or group record album in country music history.

Vaporize followed in 1999, immediately returning the Dixie Chicks to the amphetamine reaches of the rural area charts with the lead single, "Ready to Run." "Auf wiedersehen Earl" was likewise a smash single for the group. In May 2002, the Dixie Chicks joined Shakira, Mary J. Blige, Cher, and Celine Dion for the Fifth Annual VH1 Divas Show in Las Vegas. Three months later, the girls were back up in the game with release of their one-sixth record album, Home plate, their start for their possess Sony imprint, Open Wide Records. Circus tent of the World Tour: Live and its attendant DVD arrived in 2003, followed by the chart-topping album, Taking the Long Way, in 2006.

Heinz pulls mayo ad after complaints

LONDON —

Heinz Co. said viewer complaints prompted it to pull a British television advertisement for mayonnaise that showed two men kissing.

The ad for Heinz Deli Mayo depicted a kitchen scene involving two children, a father and a male deli cook with a New York accent, whom the children addressed as "Mum." At the end of the ad, the cook kisses the father as he leaves for work.

The Advertising Standards Authority said it received 202 complaints, some that said the advertisement was offensive, inappropriate and unsuitable for children.

Heinz said the ad was withdrawn because of "consumer feedback." Spokesman Nigel Dickie said Tuesday that the company apologized if it had offended anyone.

Fox News host Bill O'Reilly complained about the advertisement on Friday during his show, "The O'Reilly Factor."

"I just want mayonnaise. I don't want guys kissing," he said.

British gay rights group Stonewall said it was shocked that Heinz had yanked what it called an "innocuous" ad and urged gay consumers to boycott the company.

The ad, which was launched on British television just over a week ago and was meant to run for five weeks, was taken off the air Friday, Heinz said in a statement released Monday.

The ad did not run in the U.S.

'Hancock' going off before the fireworks

Many theaters will begin screening Tuesday night

Sony just can't wait to release its big Will Smith starrer "Hancock," so it isn't.

Most of the 3,965 theaters that have booked the superhero action film through the upcoming Independence Day weekend have scheduled "Hancock" showtimes beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

"It's one of those big popcorn-picture wide releases that is going to appeal to every kind of moviegoer," Sony distribution president Rory Bruer said.

But though that broad appeal might make it a no-brainer to unspool "Hancock" at least a couple days in advance of the Friday holiday -- letting word of mouth spread through the boxoffice weekend -- Sony's intent to include the film's Tuesday night grosses in its Wednesday totals is sure to draw some criticism. Records are tallied of movie openings of all sorts, including best opening-day performances, and "Hancock" is sure to post a big number Wednesday.

"It will probably get an asterisk," Bruer acknowledged.

Midnight screenings are commonly lumped in with next-day grosses, but it's much less common for a studio to do so with earlier showtimes.

"What time does a picture have to open on a Tuesday before it's considered a Tuesday gross?" a rival distribution exec fumed.

"Hancock" already has drawn some brickbats from a more predictable contingent: film critics. Some early reviews have been tough, suggesting that the film's flawed-superhero premise looked better on paper than it does up on the big screen.

Still, "Hancock" appears relatively critic-proof, with $100 million-plus over its first 5 1/2 virtually guaranteed.

Also, Sony execs are hoping the critical reaction will balance out, once all reviews are in.

"You're going to see some very good reviews as well," Bruer said.

Theater owners certainly seem stoked about getting the film.

"The level of interest in 'Hancock' is very high, and advanced ticketing has been strong," said Carlo Petrick, a spokesman for Marcus Theatres, whose 56 locations throughout the Midwest are onboard with Tuesday night showtimes.

"If this were October, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to do this," Petrick said. "But to do it in the middle of the summer, when schools are out and with all the interest in the film, I think it will do very well on Tuesday night."

Marcus is marketing the availability of "Hancock" in one of its Milwaukee theaters in so-called 4K projection -- the highest-resolution available in digital exhibition.

Once the weekend rolls around, the question for "Hancock" will be how much heft is left in its bow after the boxoffice cream is scooped off midweek. "Transformers," from DreamWorks/Paramount, opened on a Tuesday, July 3, last year and rung up $70.5 million during the subsequent Friday-Sunday.

Sony has a few different trailers of "Hancock" that it will run as TV spots throughout the week. One of the clips makes the title character's sizable flaws more apparent than in other marketing materials.

"There were various trailers based on different audiences and who we were appealing to," Bruer said. "When you have a pic of this magnitude, you don't have just one."

Born on April 7, 1920, in Varanasi into an jewish-Orthodox, well-off Brahmin family unit, Rabindra Shankar Chowdery's father, Shyƃ†m Shankar, was employed as a divan (diplomatic minister) by the Maharajah of Jhalawar. By the age of 13, Ravi Shankar was going along on every tour of his brother Uday Shankar's Compaigne de Danse et Musique Hindou (Company of Hindu Dance and Music). At the All-Bengali Music Conference in December 1934, he met the multi-instrumentalist Allauddin Khan. Precisely when Allauddin Khan was born is uncertain. People risk dates in the 1860s around 1862, but in later old age he himself gave his age arbitrarily. He would transform many musicians' lives, only he had an incalculable effect on Ali Akbar (his word), Annapurna Devi (his girl), and Shankar himself.

Allauddin Khan joined Uday's troupe as its principal soloist about 1935-1936.

In 1938, Shankar gave up a potential drop career as a professional dancer and went to study with Allauddin Khan in Maihar. In 1939, he began gift public recitals and came verboten of education at the death of 1944. Until 1948, he based himself in Bombay and gave programs all over India. He toured and wrote for films and ballet. Around this time he began his recording calling with a little academic session for HMV (Republic of India). Work for All India Radio followed; as music theatre director from February 1949 to January 1956 in New Delhi. Concurrently, his international wiz was on the uprise. In 1954, he performed in the Soviet Union. In 1956, he played his debut solo concerts in Western Europe and the U.S. Within a tenner he would be the near famous Indian musician on the planet. Within two decades he would become in all probability the most noted Indian alive. His English-language autobiography, My Music, My Life (1969), is still one of the topper general introductions to Hindustani music.

Shankar is non linear. Apart from pursuing a career as a graeco-Roman performer, he has as well experimented outside this field. For this reason he has attracted criticism from purists. Some of this, especially during the Beatles epoch, doubtlessly had an element of jealousy to it; some was sure enough warranted, because Shankar did take many chances. In fact, that was one of the things that unbroken his music exciting. To use a cricketing look-alike -- baseball game would be all out or keeping -- Shankar's batten median has remained high passim a long and illustrious life history.
